Use Mic 1 (used for self voice recordings) or Mic 2
mic placement/distance-narration vs. speaking in a setting
Wear headphones, and adjust volume to taste.
Capture settings vs. editing settings
When you are capturing audio to Pro Tools the computer channel (channel 8 on the mixer) should be off and the Mic channel (either 1 or 2 depending on which mic you are using) should be on and fader should be at about zero on the board. This should insure that you get a clean recording without distortion. However, if you see the meters hit red in Pro Tools as you are recording or it sounds distorted in your headphones, move the fader down a little and see if it sounds better. You can always make something louder but you can never fix distortion so if you're in doubt, take it down a notch.
(computer is either source or destination, but they can't be both at the same time.)
NEVER feed a sound device from itself when recording - can damage equipment and EARS!
Where are you recording to? Pro Tools, Audio Hijack or CD-R?
