Overview

When using the flipcams and DSLR for shooting video, be advised that the files that are transferred from the cameras are not 'Finale-ready,' and require conversion before they can be edited.

This Wiki doc will cover the steps for segmenting and exporting your video for upload to the internet. You will be using the MPEG Streamclip program, which should be available in the Application folder on the Macs.

Conversion process

Exporting from Final Cut Express

1) In Final Cut Express, you will export each video or song into a single, self-contained Quicktime movie using File > Export > QuickTime Movie.

Note: DO NOT USE “Using QuickTime Compression.

This process takes approximately 2 minutes of processing time for each minute of the video, so be patient.

Once completed, you will have a complete, uncompressed video that may be trimmed, exported and compressed into H.264 using MPEG Streamclip.

2) Launch MPEG Streamclip from the Application folder or from the Dock. Open your movie in it, and begin segmenting into parts for export. You may set the In and Out points using the slider and the the I and O keys, just like Final Cut. You are creating the necessary sub-10 minute parts to your episode. Choose the best In and Out points for each part, removing any unnecessary footage at start and finish. Remember: Each part must be under 10 minutes. Use the Right and Left cursor error keys on the keyboard to move frame by frame backwards and forwards if you need to, so that you get the In and Out points just the way you want them.

3) When you have the In and Out set just right for this part, go to File > Export to MPEG 4. You'll see the compression setting screen. You should set everything exactly like this:

mp

You may also use the Preset for YouTube H264 in MPEG Streamclip, which should be the same as settings in the above image.

4) Click the “Make MP4” button in lower right. Save your video with a version of the final title: Laborvision 2 8 10 “Unions in Missouri” on KDHX 1 of 3 so that when you upload it to YouTube, you will already have the title set and will only need to change 2 8 10 to 2/8/10.

5) When the movie finishes exporting, return to MPEG Streamclip and do the same for all the remaining parts of the episode.

You're now ready to begin uploading to KDHX Media YouTube.
