Editing

Generate Evergreen Episodes

  1. Create a new 'parent' folder for the project, within which you'll file source files, recorded from air or for Syndication/PRX, edited masters, graphics, text playlists for each episode. Title the folder: Year-Month-Day (SHOW NAME) for PRX e.g. "2021-07-04 Global Grooves for PRX"
  2. Find original recordings in the Broadcasts and Podcasts server/Show Content Folder
  3. Drag and copy the audio files from the server into the audio folder of the project, and subsequently into the DAW session, placing each segment on a separate track, which will help in measuring target lengths for each segment.
  4. Use command + E to separate talk segments from musical works. Use markers to mark each segment. Name them in the manner that works for you.
  5. Listen to each segment for non-evergreen, time or location sensitive content, and edit out that content, noting if it should be replaced or is negligible. Details about time and location sensitivity are found here: Evergreen
  6. After completing 5 or 6 episodes, determine what needs to be re-recorded and write up a script with that information, using outline form vs. scripting the host's exact words.
  7. As needed, create precise replacement dialog in the script for station and show IDs that are generic for the program, leaving out KDHX and ST. Louis references when not in context of producer of syndicate show, vs being live. KDHX plugs are appropriate only introducing the studio location, and producer of the episodes, reserved for acknowledgement at the final segment of each hour, in a standard PRI/PRX crediting style.
  8. Schedule a recording session and make sure to ask for filler music and instrumentals.
  9. Each part should be roughly 19 minutes long, with each hour being precisely 57 minutes. Add filler music where needed. NOTE: Fading out longer instrumentals in varying sections of the program to trim time can be OK. (it need not come out of the final track only)
  10. Create 6 one minute (exactly 60 Seconds) instrumental beds from the music provided by the host. These are intended for use by the syndicate station to fill time or speak over while keeping the context of the show theme intact. Each will be used 1 time each per episode, and should be replaced after use in 3-4 episodes. Best to assume the need for 18 different instrumental beds to cover the full season of 13 episodes.

Finalize the Series & Piece (Episode) Preparation

  1. Verify file names comply with example: MMGRS1E1H1P1.wav
    1. Each 19-minute segment named accordingly:
      1. MMGR: show prefix, 2-4 letters from the show name
        1. S1: the season number
        2. E1: the episode number
        3. H1: the hour number (in this case, 1 out of 2 hours per episode)
        4. P1: the part (19 minute segment) of the hour, 3 per hour
    2. Each 1 minute theme music break named accordingly: MMGRS1E1H1B1
      1. B1: break number, should be 3 breaks per hour of the episode
  2. CONVERT your final WAV files using the verified PRX converter (generates mp2 files, and should be installed on all studio workstations)
  3. Login to PRX, choose “My PRX” and then “KDHX”
  4. Choose "Create New Piece"
