This page outlines the process of photography publication in Joomla. It assumes that you've already uploaded the photos to Flickr and created a photo set. For details on that process, read Publishing Photo Sets to Flickr.

This article only covers stand-along photography articles, where photos were captured at a live event, outside of the KDHX studios. For process and guidelines on photos taken for a Live at KDHX session, see Publishing photo sets for Live at KDHX Sessions.

Preparing the copy

Photographers are required to submit 50-150 words describing the event. The text should be engaging and give a factual overview of the concert or event. It should not be a review, and criticism is often out of place here.

Copy will be submitted with the photos, via Basecamp. Photographers may paste the text in the message box when uploading; may attach a separate Word doc, RTF, or text file; or may include a file in the ZIP file containing the photos.

Formatting and style

Strip the copy of unwanted formatting characters (e.g. smart quotes) by running it through the Convert Word to Plain Text tool, regardless of whether or not the text originated in MS Word. Copy the clean text and paste it into a text editor -- Notepad on Windows or TextEdit on Mac are both included with their operating systems, but any text editor is fine.

Content formatting on KDHX.org is based on AP style guidelines -- with a few minor variations AP style is used throughout. Read KDHX online writing style for an overview on the most common rules that you will encounter. Further details on AP style can be found at the Purdue Online Writing Lab.

The copy should start with a lede of approximately 30 words. More than 30 words may be included in the lede, but if the lede is much longer than that then it will be cut off when displaying in some article listings.

Fact checking

Check all band and musician names for spelling, and check any other factual references (such as album titles, place of origin for the band, etc). Official artist websites and Facebook pages should be used as primary sources. Information on Wikipedia may be used to verify facts, but only if these primary sources do not contain the info.

Creating the article in Joomla

From the admin panel for KDHX.org, create a new K2 article. This can be done by selecting "Add new item" from the Control Panel, or by selecting "New" from the action bar at the top of the K2 Items view. In the currently installed version of Joomla, the "New" button in the K2 Items view does not work properly in Google Chrome.

Title

Note that the only capitalized words in a title aligning with AP style are the first word and proper nouns. See [guidelines] for more detail.

The headliner is listed first, with secondary (opening) acts listed in parentheses.

Format:

Concert photos: Jason Isbell (with American Aquarium and the Dive Poets) at Off Broadway, Tuesday, June 19

Note that acts are listed left to right in order of decreasing billing (i.e. headliner first, the act performing immediately before the headliner second, etc).

Variations:

For festivals or non-music events, use "Festival photos" and "Event photos," respectively, as the pre text.

For co-headline shows, list both headliners first, with any additional support acts in parentheses): Concert photos: Ha Ha Tonka and Langhorne Slim (with Kasey Anderson) at the Duck Room, Friday, June 6

For showcases, when there's not a specific headliner, do not list any acts in parentheses. This is most common for all-local shows: Concert photos: The Blind Eyes, Middle Class Fashion and Union Tree Review at the Firebird, Thursday, April 2

Title alias (URL)

Leave this blank. This will be automatically generated by Joomla.

Featured

Depending on the profile of the show and other currently-featured content, you may choose to feature the article, which places the article on the front page of KDHX.org and the slide show on the Music page. See Featured items for more details.

Published

If you're simply creating the article for publication at some later date, then leave this set at No. Otherwise, published should be checked Yes.

Social media

Much of the traffic to these articles originates from Facebook and Twitter, so it's extremely important to seed the content on both platforms.

Read Seeding KDHX pages on Facebook and Twitter for guidelines on this process.

Other

If access to a show was obtained via a band member, publicist, record label, or other external source, send the individual(s) that granted access a link to the article. The publicist or musician will be more likely to post to official social media accounts. This is also shows them the high-quality content that we've produced, which makes it more likely that they'll be willing to grant access again in the future.
