Overview
 +

 +
This page outlines the process of photography publication in Joomla. It assumes that you've already uploaded the photos to Flickr and created a photo set. For details on that process, read Publishing photo sets to Flickr.
 +

 +
This article only covers stand-alone photography articles, where photos were captured at a live event, outside of the KDHX studios. For process and guidelines on photos taken for a Live at KDHX session, see Publishing photo sets for Live at KDHX Sessions.

Preparing the copy
 +

Photographers are required to submit 50-150 words describing the event. The text should be engaging and give a factual overview of the concert or event. It should not be a review, and criticism is often out of place here.
 +

 +
Copy should be submitted with the photos. Photographers may paste the text in the message box when uploading; may attach a separate Word doc, RTF, or text file; or may include a file in the ZIP file containing the photos.
 +

 +
: Formatting and style
 +

 +
:* Strip the copy of unwanted formatting characters (e.g. smart quotes) by running it through the Convert Word to Plain Text tool, regardless of whether or not the text originated in MS Word. Copy the clean text and paste it into a text editor -- Notepad on Windows or TextEdit on Mac are both included with their operating systems, but any text editor is fine.
 +

 +
:* Content formatting on KDHX.org is based on AP style guidelines -- with a few minor variations AP style is used throughout. Read KDHX online writing style for an overview on the most common rules that you will encounter. Further details on AP style can be found at the Purdue Online Writing Lab.
 +

 +
:* The copy should start with a lede of approximately 30 words. More than 30 words may be included in the lede, but if the lede is much longer than that then it will be cut off when displaying in some article listings.
 +

 +
: Fact checking
 +

 +
:* Check all band and musician names for spelling, and check any other factual references, such as album titles, place of origin for the band, etc).
 +

 +
:* Official artist websites and Facebook pages should be used as primary sources. Information on Wikipedia may be used to verify facts, but only if these primary sources do not contain the info.

Creating the article in Joomla - K2 Add/Edit Item
 +

 +
From the admin panel for KDHX.org, create a new K2 article. This can be done by selecting Add new item from the Control Panel, or by selecting New from the action bar at the top of the K2 Items view. In the currently installed version of Joomla, the New button in the K2 Items view does not work properly in Google Chrome.

 +
Note that the only capitalized words in a title aligning with AP style are the first word and proper nouns. See headline guidelines for more detail.
 +

 +
The headliner is listed first, with secondary (opening) acts listed in parentheses.

<pre>
 +
EX: Concert photos: Jason Isbell (with American Aquarium and the Dive Poets) at Off Broadway, Tuesday, June 19
 +
</pre>
 +

 +
Variations
 +

 +
For festivals or non-music events, use "Festival photos" and "Event photos," respectively, as the pre text.
 +
<pre>
 +
EX: Festival photos: Grove Fest with Hazard to ya Booty, Dive Poets and more at the Demo, Friday, October 4
 +
</pre>
 +
For co-headline shows, list both headliners first, with any additional support acts in parentheses):
 +
<pre>
 +
EX: Concert photos: Ha Ha Tonka and Langhorne Slim (with Kasey Anderson) at the Duck Room, Friday, June 6
 +
</pre>
 +
For showcases, when there's not a specific headliner, do not list any acts in parentheses. This is most common for all-local shows:

The prepared copy should start with a lede of approximately 30 words.
Send requests for all shows 2-3 weeks before the show for all venues, with the exception of the following (and you will more than likely have to follow up within a week of the show):
+
*The Fox: Angie Hawf - Send request ASAP. Tickets go fast and are very limited.
+
*The Peabody: Publicist - Same as above
+
*Live Nation Shows: Amy Moorehouse - Amy will accept requests at any point after the press release is issued but again, you will need to follow up as the show approaches
+
*The Pageant: Publicist - Up to a month in advance of the show, follow up 1-2 weeks prior

Overview

This page outlines the process of photography publication in Joomla. It assumes that you've already uploaded the photos to Flickr and created a photo set. For details on that process, read Publishing photo sets to Flickr.

This article only covers stand-alone photography articles, where photos were captured at a live event, outside of the KDHX studios. For process and guidelines on photos taken for a Live at KDHX session, see Publishing photo sets for Live at KDHX Sessions.

Preparing the copy

Photographers are required to submit 50-150 words describing the event. The text should be engaging and give a factual overview of the concert or event. It should not be a review, and criticism is often out of place here.

Copy should be submitted with the photos. Photographers may paste the text in the message box when uploading; may attach a separate Word doc, RTF, or text file; or may include a file in the ZIP file containing the photos.

Formatting and style
 • Strip the copy of unwanted formatting characters (e.g. smart quotes) by running it through the Convert Word to Plain Text tool, regardless of whether or not the text originated in MS Word. Copy the clean text and paste it into a text editor -- Notepad on Windows or TextEdit on Mac are both included with their operating systems, but any text editor is fine.
 • Content formatting on KDHX.org is based on AP style guidelines -- with a few minor variations AP style is used throughout. Read KDHX online writing style for an overview on the most common rules that you will encounter. Further details on AP style can be found at the Purdue Online Writing Lab.
 • The copy should start with a lede of approximately 30 words. More than 30 words may be included in the lede, but if the lede is much longer than that then it will be cut off when displaying in some article listings.
Fact checking
 • Check all band and musician names for spelling, and check any other factual references, such as album titles, place of origin for the band, etc).
 • Official artist websites and Facebook pages should be used as primary sources. Information on Wikipedia may be used to verify facts, but only if these primary sources do not contain the info.

Creating the article in Joomla - K2 Add/Edit Item

From the admin panel for KDHX.org, create a new K2 article. This can be done by selecting Add new item from the Control Panel, or by selecting New from the action bar at the top of the K2 Items view. In the currently installed version of Joomla, the New button in the K2 Items view does not work properly in Google Chrome.

Title

Note that the only capitalized words in a title aligning with AP style are the first word and proper nouns. See [guidelines] for more detail.

The headliner is listed first, with secondary (opening) acts listed in parentheses.

EX: Concert photos: Jason Isbell (with American Aquarium and the Dive Poets) at Off Broadway, Tuesday, June 19

Note that acts are listed left to right in order of decreasing billing (i.e. headliner first, the act performing immediately before the headliner second, etc).

Variations

For festivals or non-music events, use "Festival photos" and "Event photos," respectively, as the pre text.

EX: Festival photos: Grove Fest with Hazard to ya Booty, Dive Poets and more at the Demo, Friday, October 4

For co-headline shows, list both headliners first, with any additional support acts in parentheses):

EX: Concert photos: Ha Ha Tonka and Langhorne Slim (with Kasey Anderson) at the Duck Room, Friday, June 6

For showcases, when there's not a specific headliner, do not list any acts in parentheses. This is most common for all-local shows:

EX: Concert photos: The Blind Eyes, Middle Class Fashion and Union Tree Review at the Firebird, Thursday, April 2

Title alias (URL)

Leave this blank. This will be automatically generated by Joomla.

Category

Use the drop-down list to choose "Music News"

Tags

When typing in this area, use the suggested tags provided by the system whenever possible.

Include the following;

 • the names of all bands who performed
 • the venue name
 • genre tag(s)
 • the words "concerts," "concert photos" and "photography"

Featured

Depending on the profile of the show and other currently-featured content, you may choose to feature the article, which places the article on the front page of KDHX.org and the slide show on the Music page. See Featured items for more details.

The default is set to "No."

Published

If you're simply creating the article for publication at some later date, then leave this set at "No."

The default is set to "Yes."

Content Tab

Introtext

The prepared copy should start with a lede of approximately 30 words.

Paste the clean text from the first sentence of the article into the large white top box, labeled "Introtext" on the upper right above the text tools.

The band names and the venue should be linked back to the KDHX website. Searching on KDHX.org, find the "tag" and "calendar" listings for linkage.

URLs look like these;

For venues:

For bands:

Other misc:

Copy this link, then paste it into the "Lookup" field of the Reverse URL Lookup and click on the "Lookup" button.

The returned "Results" can then be copied, and used to create links within the clean text of the article.

See URLs for frequently used pages

Fulltext

Paste the remaining clean text from the rest of the article into the large white bottom box, labeled "Fulltext" on the upper right above the text tools.

Use links as described above for band names, event names, festival names and venues not already mentioned (and linked) in the lede.

Image Tab

Using Photoshop, or some other image resizing tool, change the size of the photograph to 600px wide and 400px high for most articles; 508x170 for Live Performance articles.

If you are not receiving a photo from KDHX volunteer photographers, and are having trouble finding a suitable photograph to use for your article, you may wish to consult with the document Suggestions for locating images.

Item Image - using the "Browse" function, find and choose the 600x400 size photo created for this article. Preferred formats are; JPG, GIF or PNG.

Item image caption - the name of the band and venue or a simple description of the photo contents.

Item image credits - enter the name of the photographer (if known) for the photo used.

- If the image was found on a specific website, use this format; [PHOTOGRAPHER] / [URL]
ex. John Smith / stlshakespeare.org
- If you only have the website where a photo was found, but not the photographer's name, use a short version of the URL. Do not include "http://" or "www." For instance;
 • stlshakespeare.org
 • slso.org
 • repstl.org
 • facebook.com/bobdylan

Item image preview - after the "Item Image" has been chosen, and the article "Saved," a thumbnail of the image will appear here. To remove it, check the box directly under it, and "Save" or "Apply."

NOTE - A photo that is deleted and replaced often gets caught up in the cache and will not display
correctly on the webpage. If this occurs, contact kelly at kdhx dot org. He will clear the cache and correct the issue.

One photo is chosen to use for the article from the set of photographs submitted; it must be landscaped format.

Image Gallery Tab

Enter a zip file with images - do not enter a file using the "Browse" option, all photos must contained in a Flickr set.

or enter the URL of a Flickr set - copy the URL of the Flickr photo set and paste it into this field.

To remove the Flickr URL, check the box directly under it, and "Save" or "Apply."

Sidebar Drop-Tabs

Author publishing status

Author - using the "Change" link, choose the photographers' name from the pop-up window.

For multi photographer events, use the name of the person who submitted the copy.

NOTE - A glitch in this search tool will require you to leave off the first letter
of the name you are searching for; i.e., Virginia = "irginia"

Access level - defaults to "Public," should be changed to "Special" until it should be viewable on the KDHX.org website. The article will be viewable to the creator on KDHX.org, as long the creator is logged in.

When the article is ready to be published on KDHX.org, this field should be changed to "Public."

Metadata Information

Description - paste the clean text from the first sentence of the article into this field. It will be the same text contained in the Content Tab's "Introtext" field.

Remove any quotation marks (") or apostrophes (').

Keywords - items should be separated by commas and a space.

 • band name(s)
 • genre(s)
 • venue
 • and the following words; St. Louis, KDHX, concerts, concert photos, photography
EX: Beth Bombara, Tom Hall, rock, folk, Plush, concerts, concert photos, photography

Robots - leave this field blank.

Author - use the same Author name as contained within the "Author publishing status" "Author" field.

Proofing and publication

Once you are satisfied with your article, make the following changes to publish live.

 1. change Access level to Public.
 2. find an article to remove from being featured on the front page, and change the Featured radio button to No within it's K2 item.
 3. change the Featured radio button in your new article to Yes.
 4. check your work on the kdhx.org front page and make sure that everything is visible.

Save your work.

Seeding content

Much of the traffic to these articles originates from Facebook and Twitter, so it's extremely important to seed the content on both platforms.

Read Seeding KDHX pages on Facebook and Twitter for guidelines on this process.

Other

If access to a show was obtained via a band member, publicist, record label, or other external source, send the individual(s) that granted access a link to the article. The publicist or musician will be more likely to post to official social media accounts. This is also shows them the high-quality content that we've produced, which makes it more likely that they'll be willing to grant access again in the future.
