88.1 KDHX is known for broadcasting some of the most eclectic and excellent music programming of any radio station in the world. Likewise our website, KDHX.org, is an amazing source of music reviews, interviews and other features. Our volunteer music writers make that content happen.

Do I need to love music?

Yes. A casual interest in music isn't enough to be a music writer. You need to be passionate about a wide range of music. You also need to love live music and be interested in going to shows.

Do I need to listen to KDHX?

Yes. You should be familiar with the breadth and depth of the programming KDHX offers. Remember you can stream all our programs, archived for two weeks, at KDHX.org.

What kind of writing will I be doing?

KDHX is interested in:

- Live at KDHX articles - short, lively "critic's pick"-style profile pieces to accompany our in-studio session pages.

- Concert reviews - national and local; almost all genres and styles.

- Record reviews - new releases in a wide variety of genres.

- Artist interviews - often done over the phone.

- 88.1 KDHX DJ Spotlights - interviews with KDHX DJs.

- Think pieces - reflections on music, past or present.

- Local music profiles - profiles and interviews with local bands.

- Lists - thoughtful, creative and fun lists with substance and relevance to dates in history.

- News - any music related news that our audience needs to know.

Will I be edited?

Yes. Our editor will edit for style, content, grammar and AP Style. He will also strive to provide you with timely and constructive feedback.

Are deadlines important?

Deadllines are vital. You must be responsible and able to make deadlines.

Can I work from home? Do I need to check my e-mail regularly?

Yes and yes.

Do I need to attend KDHX orientation before writing?

You need to sign up for orientation and confirm the date. Once you've signed up, you may begin contributing.

Will I get free stuff?

We can often get you on the list for shows you are reviewing. We can also provide promo copies of CDs you are reviewing.

Will I get a byline?

Always.

Is writing for KDHX just like writing for my own blog?

No. KDHX has a unique audience and a diverse perspective. Writers must always keep the values of KDHX in mind.

Can I make my own assignments?

The editor will most often make the assignments, but he loves pitches.

How much writing will I be doing?

This varies depending on your schedule and on the editor, but expect to write one to four articles each month.

Will I only get to write about music I like?

No. The editor may assign bands and artists you've never heard of before. If you absolutely hate or have no interest in a particular style of music, then you should let the editor know. Openness to new and challenging sounds is a key virtue of a good music writer.
